Safe Storage

What is safe storage and why should I care?

Cannabis safe storage is a community prevention strategy that helps protect children, teens, pets, and other household members from accidental exposure or unauthorized access. It means keeping cannabis products secured in a locked container, box, or lock bag, out of reach of children and teens.

Cannabis use during adolescence is associated with impairments in memory, attention, learning, and the development of mood disorders, particularly with frequent use or high-potency products.

In Cortland County, youth with difficulties report higher rates of past-30-day cannabis use than their peers without difficulties (8.4% vs. 4.0%). Among youth with difficulties who use cannabis, 70% report daily use, and 92% report using high-THC products, increasing concerns about potential cognitive and mental health impacts.

Access is another important part of the picture. In 2024, 48% of Cortland County youth with a difficulty who used cannabis reported getting it from friends or family. Safe storage can help reduce opportunities for youth to access cannabis unintentionally or without permission.

Keep kids out of cannabis products. Store yours responsibly.

What’s a lock bag?

A cannabis lock bag is a small, lockable pouch designed to keep cannabis products securely stored and prevent unauthorized access. It adds a layer of protection, especially in homes where children or teens may be present.

How do I set the combination?

1. Open the lock bag (the default combination is 0-0-0).
2. Push the adjusting sheath to the direction of the arrow.
3. Turn the figure wheel to the new code you would like.
4. Turn the adjusting sheath to its original position and the new code will be set.
